Jewish Holiday Observances

Trivia concerning Hanukkah

While on the  subject of Jewish Holidays, we should mention Hanukkah or Chanukah which is the
Jewish holiday which begins on the 25th day of the month of
Kislev. It is an eight day holiday that
celebrates the victory the Jews [Maccabees] had against the Greek persecution
and religious oppression that were plaguing their Jewish nation. Once the Maccabees had defeated the Greeks,
they triumphantly marched back to the Temple.

When they arrived there they found only one
flask of oil to use in the lighting of the Menorah. Miraculously, this flask lasted for eight
days. The holiday of Chanukah
commemorates that miracle and it is why a light on the Menorah is lighted each
day for eight days.

While Rosh Hashanah is the most popular Jewish holiday to send greeting cards, some like to send out Hanukkah cards. We actually have some that have the menorah and/or star of David and/or dredle along with an ornament and Christmas tree which could be used as a mulitcultural card.
