More Christmas Trivia | The Poinsettia

How the Poinsettia became a symbol of Christmas

One
of the most popular and beautiful Christmas plants is the Poinsettia. The Poinsettia is a plant native to Mexico
and prized for its bright colors, most commonly the festive dark red one. It was first introduced to the United
States
in 1828, by Joel R. Poinsett, the U.S.
ambassador to Mexico.

This most popular holiday plant can now be bought at almost any supermarket,
mall, and nursery across the United States. They come in green as well as the more popular red. You will be hard pressed this holiday season
to find a house or church that doesn’t have one of these plants placed on
the doorstep or adorning the fireplace! Most people don’t just buy one, but several. They are inexpensive and will last all winter if cared for properly. What a great gift as well, for Christmas (just add a Christmas card), or any time leading up to Christmas as a house warming or hostess gift.

I couldn’t pass up an opportunity here just to mention that if you are really into poinsettias, we have some beautiful poinsettia Christmas cards you might want to check out in our contemporary Christmas card section as well as the Miscellaneous section.
