What do fruitcakes have to do with Christmas?
What about fruitcakes? Where did they originate from and
what do they have to do with Christmas? Many folks will tell you that Christmas
wouldn’t be the same without them. They are a common gift and some make at
least one every Christmas.
According to "The Joy of Cooking,"
by Irma Rombauer and Marion Becker, "Many people fee that
these cakes improve greatly with age. when they are well saturated with alcoholic
liquors which raise the spirits and keep down mold, and are buried in powdered
sugar in tightly closed tins, they have been enjoyed as long as 25 years after
baking."
So…if you aren’t into fruitcakes and Aunt Thelma gave you one last Christmas,
don’t despair. If you have kept it closed securely, apparently you don’t have
to be concerned about giving it away this year to someone who likes fruitcakes.
It will be better than when you received it last year. That’s one less gift you
have to buy this year. Be sure to add one of our beautiful Christmas
cards to enhance you gift and show your appreciation for your association.
To answer (or not) the question of what do fruitcakes have to do with
Christmas? Nothing. There is no word yet as to how they ever got attached to
Christmas. They just seem to show up more then than any other time of year.
