Christmas In Jamaica As A Kid - Photo Christmas Cards
One year as a kid we spent Christmas and New Years in beautiful Jamaica. My parents were worried that Santa wouldn’t know where to find us, so they made special arrangements with him to come a little early. Thus, we weren’t expecting the surprise we got on Christmas day.
While my sister and I were enjoying the beach and watching the hermit crab races, all of a sudden there was a commotion. As I looked out towards the water I was thrilled to see a young Jamaican Santa (with an obviously fake beard as he kept adjusting it) crewing his own tiny, two person sailboat towards the shore. Inside the boat was a big red sack full of gifts for all the children at the beach. He actually looked like a Coca Cola ad, because as he came in we could see him drinking out of a glass Coca Cola bottle.
I remember him stumbling off the boat and being assisted to his chair. At first we all thought it was just because he needed to get his land legs back under him. When it was my turn to sit on his lap and he started talking to me, I recall his breath could have killed a horse from the smell of alcohol. I don’t think it was Coca Cola in that bottle. It became very apparent that he wasn’t stumbling from sea legs, he was as drunk as a skunk!
Unfortunately photo Christmas Cards weren’t a popular thing back then, because that would have made a great one. It’s funny to look back on and to this day, we still hang the handmade Jamaican Christmas Angels he gave us, on our tree.
