In-Laws in Photo Christmas Cards

I had an interesting experience while on vacation in Door County, Wisconsin. My mother-in-law, who I love dearly, did an interesting thing - she took a “family picture” which we use every year for photo Christmas cards without two of her family members. That’s right, myself and the other “in-law”.

What do you all think about this? Is it really just and true to exclude in-laws in a photo Christmas card? Is my mother-in-law trying to make a point? Should I be offended or just blow it off?

I’ve been married to my spouse for five years now. We have two children. My sister-in-law, who was also excluded, has been married for six years and also has two children. Every year up to this point, we have all been included in the annual photo Christmas card pose. Maybe my “sweet, thoughtful” mother-in-law wanted a change of scenery. Maybe she wanted to stick to her roots. Maybe she was just flat out being selfish and ungrateful for all we’ve done for her children.

What are your thoughts? Is it really courteous to exclude in-laws from photo Christmas cards (or any family pictures for that matter)? Do you think I should forward my thoughts on the subject to my mother-in-law for review? Is there a chance she might feel the same way if next year we excluded her from our annual photo Christmas card? I would definitely assume so.
