Make Your Mark…Postmark, That Is

Countless households across the country consider the sending of their annual Christmas cards to be a very momentous occasion in the year. Sure, most families who send holiday greetings to friends and family think it’s important and worthwhile, but it’s a special breed of holiday wellwisher that takes every last detail about their Christmas card into consideration, planning from the clothing in complementary colors that the family will wear in their Christmas card photo to the ink color of the pen they will write messages and sign their names (even the dog’s name) and even right down to the postmark that cancels the Christmas (secular or religious?) stamp on the envelope.

In case you weren’t aware, there are numerous post offices all over America that will put their holiday-themed postmark on your Christmas cards. We’re not talking about such generic, everyday greetings as “Merry Christmas” and the date, no. Rather, we’re talking about the envelope being postmarked from cities such as Bethlehem, Maryland, and Christmas, Michigan, not to mention Silver Bell, Arizona, and Snow, Oklahoma. It’s even possible to get a special North Pole postmark on your Christmas cards. All you need to do to get that North Pole postmark is to mail (in one large envelope) your stamped Christmas cards to a certain post office in Nome, Alaska, and they will cancel the stamps with the North Pole postmark and send them on to your friends and family.

The post offices in these cities and towns are kept very busy during the holiday season putting their postmarks on thousands upon thousands of Christmas cards from out-of-towners. But they agree, it’s all worth it for the extra dose of holiday spirit that come with their special Christmas cards.
