Now Appearing on a Stamp Near You: Christmas Cards!
It is truly mind-boggling to think about all the things that have appeared on a postage stamp, whether here in the United States or overseas on other countries’ postage stamps. Not that we’re going to try to name them all, but to begin with, we’ve seen birds, flowers, candy, classic art, pop art, cartoons, snowflakes, royalty, athletes, politicians, authors, actors, flags, U.S. states, buildings, childrens’ toys, and Christmas cards. hristmas cards on a postage stamp?
It’s true, you can now find a Christmas card on a postage stamp, down at your local post office. The United States Postal Service recently released a new set of postage stamps featuring American designers Charles and Ray Eames. The stamps feature artwork of many images of the Eames’ most memorable and iconic designs, including fabric, an Eames chair, a universal hanger, and a Christmas card. Perhaps best known for their furniture, the Eameses were husband and wife as well as design partners. Their extraordinary body of creative work — which reflected the nation’s youthful and inventive outlook after World War II — also included architecture, films and exhibits. Without abandoning tradition, Charles and Ray Eames used new materials and technology to create high-quality products that addressed everyday problems and made modern design available to the American public.
This year, why not consider being a little inventive yourself and use the Eames Christmas card stamp to mail out your Christmas cards? It’s a little different from the usual Christmas stamps featuring Madonna and Child or holiday toys, but being different can definitely be a good thing.
