Photo Christmas Cards of the “6-4-3 Double Play”
I grew up playing shortstop and second base. The 6-4-3 Double Play is a classic baseball highlight. For those who don’t understand this lingo, “6″ is the shortstop position, “4″ is the second baseman, and “3″ is the first baseman. This is the small talk for a routine double play.
As I talked about yesterday, baseball photo Christmas cards are unique, exciting, and action packed. I think the perfect photo Christmas card collage would be the shorstop fielding a sharp grounder to his backhand side, a second baseman jumping over the opposing runner, who is trying to take him out, and finally a first baseman stretching out, almost in the splits, to beat the runner by a half step.
1982 was possibly one of the best years for a double play trio. It was the only year in which Ozzie Smith and Keith Hernandez - perhaps the finest fielding shortstop and first baseman of all time - shared an infield. Tommy Herr was a great defensive second baseman. I would love to have a picture of the three of them turning this magical memory on my next photo Christmas card.
