Did you ever wonder what the story is behind all of those candy canes and how they became so popular? They started out completely white, over 350 years ago. Beginning in Europe, they eventually made their way to the US. No one knows who invented the stripes that we have on candy canes today, but Christmas cards prior to the year 1900 showed only all-white candy canes. Christmas cards after that time period seemed to show the candy cane we’ve come to know and love today. It was also around that time period that candy-makers added peppermint and wintergreen flavors to their candy canes and those flavors then became the traditional favorites.
