Staying in Touch Over the Years
Each and every year, millions upon millions of cards, letters, and postcards arrive in Americans’ mailboxes during the holiday season. The U.S. Postal Service estimates that they process nearly two
billion Christmas cards of some shape or form each year, this despite the rise in popularity of electronic greetings sent via the Internet. Sending Christmas cards is a tradition that many people simply cannot and will not give up.
These Christmas cards, letters, and postcards are sent by immediate family members, extended family members, honorary family members, clients, customers, business providers, old friends, new friends, faraway friends, long-lost friends, former teachers, former students, former co-workers, former bosses, old college friends, old college roommates, old Army buddies, and sometimes even old veterinarians.
Whether the cards are a simple holiday greeting with a message hand-written on the inside or an elaborate package with Christmas newsletter and multiple family photos included, the basic premise of the Christmas card is to let those who are important to us in our lives know that we remember them fondly and are sending them our most sincere best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and a very happy new year. The sentiment behind Christmas cards (or postcards or letters) hasn’t changed in the more than one hundred years that people across the world have been sending them out, and that is exactly why we all keep sending them out year after year.
