Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday, and as a foodie, it is one of my favorites. But this year, I have decided to order the meal from a local restaurant. My cooking burden will consist of some reheating…that’s about it. I know, it’s shocking…and it is to me, too. But as Thanksgiving got closer and closer, I found myself stressing about what to make for dinner. Stress? Don’t need any extra, especially this year. So, we decided to order a meal and focus family activities that will make our day fun and relaxing.
One of my favorite things to do on Thanksgiving is to go to a fun movie together. Yes, I realize that isn’t groundbreaking, but our schedules rarely allow us to all get together long enough to go to a movie…some other things to do:
- play touch(tackle?) football in the yard

- go for a long walk (pup included), or better yet, a hike
- bring out all of the board games and spend the afternoon connecting over chinese checkers
- do a bit of family holiday shopping on line
- pop a bowl of popcorn and hunker down in front of the big screen
- pull out the PS 3 and play American Idol
- take turns reading to each other out of a favorite book
- play charades
- come up with a new family tradition
There are so many ways to celebrate this wonderful holiday together…and for those of us who do not have to work retail, Friday is a great family day, too! We start pulling out the Christmas decorations, testing to see what works and what doesn’t, and what will need to be replaced. As we unpack, we remember Christmases past and great times with families…it is one of my favorite times of the year.
In a year when we have so many challenges, I want to make sure I focus for at least one day on what is going right.
