What’s the Verdict on Re-Gifting?

So, I confess, I am a re-gifter…shhhh, don’t tell! And, it always works best if I have a personalized christmas card attached. And, I promise, I only give away things that are really nice, but that I simply don’t need…or want…or…

But, is that OK? I mean, obviously, I am doing it, so it must be OK with me on some level…but I always feel vaguely guilty about it and worry that I might be found out.

So, I have developed a little re-gifting code of ethics for myself…and here’s how it goes:

Never, ever re-gift anything your mother gave you…a mother ALWAYS knows

Don’t give away things from friends who are visiting soon after…of course, they will want to see what you have done with their treasure

Don’t re-gift anything that is perishable…’nuff said?

Don’t re-gift used items…that’s just bad taste

Do re-gift if you already have one of the item

Do re-gift if it doesn’t fit, isn’t your color, etc, and you aren’t likely to see the person again soon

Do re-gift objet de’ art that are not appealing to you, but that others would like.

Finally, do re-gift if you have something that you know would be absolutely perfect for someone important to you.

Personally, I don’t tell people (even if they ask where it is) that I re-gift. Though I think it is perfectly understandable, and a great way to  recycle, Idon’t want to hurt the giver who has so thoughtfully spent time purchasing the perfect gift.

So, what do you think? Are you a re-gifter? Oh, and make sure you leave your full name, just in case I have given you a gift recently…
