Children Bit By the Christmas Giving Bug
The Holidays seem to bring out the spirit of giving in all of us, even the children. During a time when children are generally more concerned about what they themselves are going to get for Christmas, it is truly wonderful to see a child who’s been bit by the giving bug. Children are amazing little beings and full of surprises. As a parent, it never ceases to amaze me the things they think of on their own.
Recently I had an experience with my own little son. I’ve been quite concerned with his “me, me, me” attitude and have been trying to think if ways to help him get “outside” of himself. He never seemed interested in helping other people unless it benefited him somehow. Then the other day he shocked the socks off of me. He did the kindest thing I had ever seen him do and it was all his idea.
We were in a restaurant that had a claw machine with a bunch of stuffed Christmas animals, when a lady won a reindeer and gave it to my son. As we were waiting for our food he saw a little boy who didn’t have a toy. Without me, he walked over to this little boy and gave him the reindeer. You should have seen the look on the other little boys face. At that moment I saw an expression on my son’s face I had never seen before. I think he finally realized the meaning of the Christmas feeling. It was a good lesson to me too.
